The original 1950’s ranch house with walkout basement was generically
placed on this magnificent lakefront property. The renovation and addition
that doubled the size of the home purposely embraced and enhanced the
spectacular views to the water through the majestic oaks.
The approach to the house is deliberately understated allowing the beautiful
setting and landscaping to take center stage. The post and beam structure
protecting the front entrance as well as the cupola were designed as
visual markers drawing visitors through the gardens to the front door.
From the lakeside the battened stonewalls give the house visual stability
reminiscent of a fortress on which the expansive glass and soaring roof
forms can perch. The entry foyer is flooded with light from the cupola
highlighting the rich colors of variegated slate, wood finishes, and
art glass inserted into the railing to playfully refract the colorful
light.
The interior of the home has a casual elegance created by the use of
several wood finishes including cherry, cedar, bamboo and fir that give
the spaces rich warmth and a sense of comfort. The dynamic wood ceilings
in the living room and master bedroom expose the structure designed
to emulate a paper fan, creating peaks and valleys that accentuate the
primary views. The angular ceilings and walls of the rooms are juxtaposed
to the sensually curved wall that draws you into the master bedroom
suite, creating a transition that is subtle yet dramatic.
The careful use of materials and crafting of details combine to produce
a sophisticated comfort that permeates the home inside and out.
